Creative Expression As Self Care
Welcome in the Spring and nourish your creative energy flow with something new.
When you think of self-care, what comes to mind? Bubble baths? Wine and chocolate? Spending a Saturday curled up on the couch reading in your pajamas?
Self care is anything that brings you joy, and I don't know about you, but there isn't much that brings me more joy in life than creating something new. It's on my daily to-do list.
It could be working on an on-going project that will eventually result in a completed new thing, or doing something more bite-sized that I can complete in under an hour, but create I must.
When it comes to welcoming in the seasons, my favorite thing to do is create a new piece of seasonal decor. I change out the decor in certain areas of my house for the current holiday or season, but creating a new piece to add to the display is a beloved tradition. Spring especially feels like the perfect time for creation, as Mother Nature reawakens and starts putting her own new beautiful creations on display.
This year, I had found an old rusty bird cage at a local antique shop (Golightly Antiques in North Richland Hills, TX - absolutely go check out this gem if you ever are nearby!), and I was immediately inspired to spruce it up for a lovely idea I had dancing around in my head. At that same wonderful shop, I also found some small old books, these adorable white ceramic birds, and even the most beautiful tea cup and saucer pair I think I've ever seen (this photo does not do it justice). With a little paint, some faux flowers, and a small string of LED lights I had on hand, this darling was born.
This is my idea of portraying the emergence from spending a winter in the cozy indoors with my books and warm drinks, to opening the door and emerging with the birds and blooming flowers. Time to go out and play! After all, another activity that brings me great joy is being outside, taking in the sounds, smells, and sights and feeling the energy of the Earth brushing my skin in the form of a light breeze, and the warm kiss of the Spring sun. Perfection.
